Forest for Tea

Forest for Tea offers a simple response to the purpose of exhibition. Yamaguchi, of strict spiritual training suggests to us that the highest purpose of utensils is use, not exhibition, therefore his rarely shows his works directly. He chooses instead to build a "forest" of ware boards, modular wooden units used for moving wet ceramic ware from one part of his studio to another. Five of the Yamaguchi ceremonial tea bowls are situated among the 1200 ware boards. It was fun to see young people in search of the bowls and adults ponder the myth of this spectacle.
