The 2009 exhibition Temple Exercises at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago has functioned as a physical and conceptual model for further built performance spaces. These projects entail the transformation of gallery and lived spaces into temple-like environments that unify disparate communities through the interrogation of issues relating to race, aesthetics and spirituality. They are inspired by both the Storefront Church, an intermediary hub for black communities, and the Zuisenji Shrine, a beautiful and meditative Buddhist Temple. Ultimately, these exercises provide vibrant constructions of space where creative installations, performances, lectures and events can effectively inspire communal social interaction and change.
