A neighborhood hardware store went under on the South Side of Chicago, at 93rd Street and Halsted. A world of objects and spaces necessaily rests on a world of repair: patches and glues, mousetraps and Drano, lottery machines and extension cords. A world of oranges and blues and browns. To see that world is to see the storefront as a reliable major artery; a world of Murphy Oil Soap and Cascade. A world cascading from necessary things that keep it together, bound with Gorilla Glue and epoxy, to a world unsettled and unbound, where streets are dark during the day and lit by night. I pray that the handyman is invited to the club!
